JR_Art

Another inspiration..

I began following JR through instagram.. I hadn't really seen his work around, but since he is always updating his photos, I got a sense of his life, his studio, and his art. A few days ago, I finally put "a name to an art".. Crossing the Williamsburg Bridge (Brooklyn, NY), I finally saw one of his recent "eyes"..

It struck me! So I finally went online and researched a bit about him..

In this video, he tells us a bit about his story, which I found to be fascinating. I would love to glue my art around the city, and be able to pass my message around and inspire people like he is doing.

The Ninth Floor by Jessica Dimmock

The most beautiful piece of work!

In an apartment above Fifth Avenue, some thirty young people live in a vortex of drug addiction and despair. In The Ninth Floor, Jessica Dimmock enters this world, exploring, in human terms, what has been lost and what may be recovered. See the project at http://mediastorm.com/publication/the-ninth-floor

"Scopophilia" by Nan Goldin

From October 29th - December 23rd
522 West 22nd St.

Scopophilia: "Love of Looking"

Nan Goldin, my favorite photographer/idol, went to the Louvre and took 400 photographs of paintings and sculptures. From that, she selected some of her own photographs, and compared them in an amazingly beautiful 25 minute slide-show installation. [Note: Beautiful music!] She compared all the photographs through body & shape, light, mood, and style - and placed them together.

I got a text message that day (on a new phone, so I had no idea who the angel was): "Nan Goldin will have her opening tonight at Matthew Marks Gallery!". I couldn't believe it. I was finally going to see her!

Unfortunately I went alone (which makes me shy and vulnerable).. I watched the installation twice, had a wine in the gallery, and waited having my cigarette, since I know she also enjoys smoking. From when I went inside for the 2nd time to watch the slide-show, to when I left, the gallery was packed, and they were only serving water! I walked around the gallery to see the prints again, when suddenly I see some crazy white boots and some wild red hair. THERE SHE WAS.

I thought I would go crazy and have an anxiety attack, but her presence just made me feel light and calm.

I stopped and just starred at her for a good 30 minutes (Yes! She looked at me and probably noticed the stalker I am). I watched everyone approaching her, telling her things. I couldn't move. She had a glass of wine in one hand, and a cigarette on the other, and she simply lit her cigarette right there! (My hero!)

A few minutes later, I turn around and I bump into Terry Richardson, my other favorite photographer.. He was humble, the show wasn't for him.. I watched him going up to Nan Goldin, and asking her if he could photograph her for his blog. I'm a follower of his blog, I actually did one for me, (which I will announce by the end of this year), and the photograph is finally online.

Photograph in Terry's Diary.com

On the first day that I don't carry any kind of camera in my bag, this happens to me. So, maybe I shouldn't carry any more cameras?

Her new photographs were beautiful. For the first time, there were MEN as subjects, (besides David Armstrong, her Ex, or Drag Queens), and that really intrigued me.

The crowd was beautiful and colorful, and Kiki Smith also went to see her!

What a night! October 29th, unforgettable!

"Photographs" by Charles Bukowski

Photographs

they photograph you on your porch
and on your couch
and standing in the courtyard
or leaning against your car

these photographers
women with big asses
which look better to you
than do their eyes or their souls

-this playing at author
it´s real Hemingway
James Joyce
stageshit

but look-
there are the books
you´ve written them
you haven´t been to Paris
but you´ve written all those books

there behind you
(and others not there,
lost or stolen)

all you´ve got to do
is look like Bukowski
for the cameras
but

you keep watching
those
astonishingly big asses
and thinking-
somebody else is getting
it

“look into my eyes,”
they say and click their cameras
and flash their cameras
and fondle their cameras

Hemingway used to box or go
fishing or to the bullfights
but after they leave
you jerk-off into the sheets
and take a hot bath

they never send the photos
like they promise to send the photos
and astonishingly big asses are
gone forever
and you´ve been a fine literary fellow-
now alive
dead soon enough
looking into and at their eyes and souls
and more.

Wasteland (Lixo Extraordinario)

A beautiful documentary.

Vik Muniz, a well-know Brazilian Photographer has the idea of photographing Trash Collectors in Jardin Gramacho in Rio de Janeiro, and selling his pictures, donating all the profit to their community. They live in the middle of the trash, trash that comes from the richest and the poorest people. They do it not only for the money, but to help their country, their family. They live in the dirty, in the stinky, work day and night, separating materials and re-selling them for their salary.

I posted something about this film recently, but now that I watched it, I love it more.

The characters are beautiful, you connect with them. You laugh. You cry. You will want to meet them, know about how they are, where they went after the film. You will love them.

And you will find out, how your trash can become someones art!

PLEASE: R E C Y C L E !
Tiao, one of the trash collectors said after he met Vik Muniz, "Now I don't collect trash - I collect recyclable materials!"

So worth watching!!!

Wasteland

:: Directed by Lucy Walker

Wasteland took about 3 years to be shot. This inspiring Documentary is about the "catadores", people who collect trash in Jardin Gramacho, in Rio de Janeiro. Vik Muniz, photographer, decided to help them by photographing them, and putting all the photos in auctions, in order to raise money for their community.
I haven't seen it yet, just the trailer. But it looks unbelievable and I can't wait to watch it.

I just made a phone call to Cinema Village, in New York City, to find out until when they would be playing, and they informed me that they extended it til next week.

WASTELAND is playing in New York til Thursday, February 17th. Worth watching it!!!

Felipe Morozini

I found out about Felipe Morozini some months ago. I went to Pinta Art Show, and discovered Zipper Galeria located in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Felipe's photography called my attention. He has a certain "voyeuristic" style, and that intrigues me.

A couple of days ago, since I'm visiting Sao Paulo, my home city, I went to Zipper to see their new exhibition. Talking to the owner, I told him what attracted me in photography, and I love, when women are subjects or themes. He told me he had a picture I would love, and showed me this one below.

Bico, Photograph by Felipe Morozini (c)

I can't forget this picture. It's as simple as that. Every time I talk about art or photography, this picture comes to my mind.
Obviously, the subject is not looking at her wallet, or herself in the mirror, she is looking back at the voyeur, or so I believe. Felipe was able to capture in perfect timing, a very sexual part of her body, and while the wall covers another one.
I love the colors, the framing, the story behind the picture. And this is for sure, one of my biggest inspirations.
Below, you can find some other of his photographs.

Ilford 3200

I've been playing with 35mm film lately... The first one I tried out with my Olympus MJU-II was the Ilford Delta 3200!!! It's beautiful. Yes, a lot of grain but also some nice contrast. I had so much fun testing it out, and not knowing what the picture would look like. Here are some:

Lina Scheynius

I recently discovered this photographer that I'm a big fan of, Lina Scheynius. I discovered her through Flickr and today I finally had time to go through her website and see all of her pictures. She also has a section there, of FAQ, where she answered many of my the questions I had in my mind. For example, she uses an OLYMPUS MJU ii or her Canon SLR, to shoot; she loves the film Ilford Delta B&W; she is from Sweden but lives in between Paris and London; she hates Digital; and the part that I most love --- she photographs who is important in her life.

Lina also takes a lot of self-portraits, and has diaries in her website, very worth taking a look.

An inspiration.

Here are some of her pictures that I most loved:

She never went to Photography school, but was always surrounded my photographers, including her father.

Ibi Ibrahim Photography

I am shooting and producing a documentary by Mariana Ferreira Goncalves, and we will be following Ibi.

Ibi is a Yemeni photographer who is now studying film at the New School. He was born in a Muslim household and now lives in New York City. His photography portrays stories he heard throughout his childhood and teenage years, usually dealing with the challenges and sexuality in the Muslim culture.

He mostly photographs in Black & White. His photo shoots are staged, usually in his rooftop or garden in the East Village.

Ibi is a sweet and outgoing young man, and I'm happy I can get to know a bit more about the story behind his art.

More pictures can be seen at his WEBSITE.

Larissa is now on BUST Magazine

My friend, colleague, sister, and co-worker is now an intern at BUST magazine and just wrote an article about one of my favorite photographers, Cindy Sherman

This is a MUST read:

She, who pretty much invented the Self-Portrait... Will write about her in a post soon.

Congratulations, La!
