Wasteland (Lixo Extraordinario)

A beautiful documentary.

Vik Muniz, a well-know Brazilian Photographer has the idea of photographing Trash Collectors in Jardin Gramacho in Rio de Janeiro, and selling his pictures, donating all the profit to their community. They live in the middle of the trash, trash that comes from the richest and the poorest people. They do it not only for the money, but to help their country, their family. They live in the dirty, in the stinky, work day and night, separating materials and re-selling them for their salary.

I posted something about this film recently, but now that I watched it, I love it more.

The characters are beautiful, you connect with them. You laugh. You cry. You will want to meet them, know about how they are, where they went after the film. You will love them.

And you will find out, how your trash can become someones art!

PLEASE: R E C Y C L E !
Tiao, one of the trash collectors said after he met Vik Muniz, "Now I don't collect trash - I collect recyclable materials!"

So worth watching!!!

Unstuck in The World

"There was once a man who became unstuck in the world – he realized that he was not his car, he realized that he was not his job, he was not his phone, his desk or his shoes. Like a boat cut from its anchor, he’d begin to drift."

"There was once a man who became unstuck in the world – he took the wind for a map, he took the sky for a clock, and he set off with no destination. He was never lost."

"There once was a man who became unstuck in the world – instead of hooks or a net, he threw himself into the sea. He was never thirsty."

"There was once a man who became unstuck in the world – with a Polaroid camera he made pictures of all the people he met, and then he gave all the pictures away. He would never forget their faces."

"There was once a man who became unstuck in the world – and each person he met became a little less stuck themselves. He traveled only with himself and he was never alone."

"There was once a man who’d become unstuck in the world – and he traveled around like a leaf in the wind until he reached the place where he started out. His car, his job, his phone, his shoes – everything was right where he’d left it. Nothing had changed, and yet he felt excited to have arrived here – as if this were the place he’d been going all along."

Castles in the Sky

... A 16mm film by Taylor Steele...
"A movie about traveling, one step too far"

One of those inspiring surf movies, that make you wanna pack, and leave.. Everything and everyone behind.. Just go, see where destiny will take you.
It's not only a film about surf, or traveling - but a film about the surfers and the their holy sea, about people, about cultures, and about inspiration.

I had already seen "Sipping Jetstreams", another of Taylor Steele's movies, and I watched it 7 times in the same day. I couldn't believe my eyes. He is capable of making, with no dialogue, no interview, the most beautiful documentaries I've ever seen. Those that make you think, "I wish I had done it".

This one is no different. Shots of horses with a rainbow, details of elephants, the sun hitting the sea and its reflection, funny personal moments, eyes all around the world.

Let's Surf!

Thank You For Reading.

Wasteland

:: Directed by Lucy Walker

Wasteland took about 3 years to be shot. This inspiring Documentary is about the "catadores", people who collect trash in Jardin Gramacho, in Rio de Janeiro. Vik Muniz, photographer, decided to help them by photographing them, and putting all the photos in auctions, in order to raise money for their community.
I haven't seen it yet, just the trailer. But it looks unbelievable and I can't wait to watch it.

I just made a phone call to Cinema Village, in New York City, to find out until when they would be playing, and they informed me that they extended it til next week.

WASTELAND is playing in New York til Thursday, February 17th. Worth watching it!!!

Felipe Morozini

I found out about Felipe Morozini some months ago. I went to Pinta Art Show, and discovered Zipper Galeria located in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Felipe's photography called my attention. He has a certain "voyeuristic" style, and that intrigues me.

A couple of days ago, since I'm visiting Sao Paulo, my home city, I went to Zipper to see their new exhibition. Talking to the owner, I told him what attracted me in photography, and I love, when women are subjects or themes. He told me he had a picture I would love, and showed me this one below.

Bico, Photograph by Felipe Morozini (c)

I can't forget this picture. It's as simple as that. Every time I talk about art or photography, this picture comes to my mind.
Obviously, the subject is not looking at her wallet, or herself in the mirror, she is looking back at the voyeur, or so I believe. Felipe was able to capture in perfect timing, a very sexual part of her body, and while the wall covers another one.
I love the colors, the framing, the story behind the picture. And this is for sure, one of my biggest inspirations.
Below, you can find some other of his photographs.

Ismália by Alphonsus de Guimaraes

My all time favorite poem.. In Portuguese, I would love to translate it when possible.

Meu poema favorito de todos os tempos. Adoraria traduzi-lo ao ingles quando possivel.

"Quando Ismália enlouqueceu,
Pôs-se na torre a sonhar...
Viu uma lua no céu,
Viu outra lua no mar.

No sonho em que se perdeu,
Banhou-se toda em luar...
Queria subir ao céu,
Queria descer ao mar...

E, no desvario seu,
Na torre pôs-se a cantar...
Estava perto do céu,
Estava longe do mar...

E como um anjo pendeu
As asas para voar...
Queria a lua do céu,
Queria a lua do mar...

Pois o resto eu ja tinha/tenho minha propria interpretacao... ;)

GoPro

Ready?!?!

This is one of the most amazing cameras I've ever seen. It shoots up to 1080p (HD), the lenses are amazing, (you can see them all on their website), and it comes with unbelievable accessories for a very cheap price!

This camera comes also with a housing, for underwater photography. It takes stills as well as films. It has kind of a "fish-eye", and the only bad thing that i found, which isn't necessarily bad, but could be, is that its only 5 mega pixels.

If you want, you can buy some adhesives and glue it to your surfboard, use it as a car mount, or put it on a helmet.
Many people might knoq about it, but I found out about it last night.

The most expensive one, with all included, (helmet, and all), is $300.00. So worth it!

This is the Go Pro Camera.

Iemanjá, Rainha do Mar

Hoje, dia 2 de Fevereiro, eh dia de Iemanja, nossa, minha, RAINHA DO MAR.
Today, February 2nd, is Iemanja's Day, our, mine, QUEEN OF THE OCEAN.

Poderosa força das águas.  Inaê, Janaína, Sereia do Mar.  Saravá minha Mãe Iemanjá!  Leva para as profundezas do teu mar sagrado.  Odoiá... Todas as minhas desventuras e infortúnios.
